Local guide · Hen and stag retreats

A hen or stag weekend can be a chance to slow down together before the wedding: a long supper, a walk through the forest, games with friends and time in the hot tub. At Wales in the Woods, we welcome both hen and stag groups looking for a relaxed countryside retreat in Mid Wales.
Our secluded valley in Abbeycwmhir, Powys, gives you space to celebrate in your own way. The emphasis is on nature, comfort and catching up with your favourite people. Think a weekend away together, with plenty of time to enjoy it.
Your own private valley for the weekend
A Whole Valley booking includes the three-bedroom cottage, all three meadow pods and the communal barn, exclusively for your group. There are no other guest groups sharing these facilities. Across the six-acre grounds, you can move between a shared meal, outdoor games and a quiet moment with a valley view.
The barn is the heart of the gathering, with kitchen, dining, lounge and games space. Sleeping accommodation is separate, in the cottage and pods. That layout gives friends a place to come together and their own sleeping spaces when they want to turn in.

A celebration with a slower pace
Plan the weekend around what the bride or groom actually enjoys. For some groups, that means a countryside walk and supper together. For others, it is a friendly games tournament, an afternoon in the hot tub and a leisurely evening around the table.
Music is welcome, and we do not have a set curfew. The character of Wales in the Woods is still a peaceful countryside getaway: our focus is relaxed celebrations, fresh air and time together. If you have particular entertainment or activity plans, tell us about them when enquiring so we can help you decide whether the setting suits your weekend.
Fun and games, in your own private retreat
Your group has the games and gathering spaces to yourselves. Play shuffleboard or darts in the barn, challenge friends to table tennis overlooking the valley, or head onto the games lawn for badminton and volleyball. Bring your favourite board games, organise a light-hearted tournament or simply see what everyone feels like doing.
There is no need to book a time slot around other guest groups: the barn, games spaces, hot tub and grounds are exclusively for your Whole Valley booking. Some friends can get competitive while others relax with a drink, enjoy the views or head out for a woodland walk. You can spend the day together without everyone having to follow the same schedule.

A simple two-night hen or stag retreat
Friday: arrive and ease into the weekend
Check-in is from 4pm. Agree sleeping arrangements before arrival, then keep supper straightforward: a meal you can prepare together in the barn makes an easy start. Bring a playlist, a few favourite games and time to catch up beside the wood burner.
Saturday: fresh air, games and time to unwind
Start with breakfast together, then head onto the forest tracks from the doorstep. Keep the walk suited to the whole group and the weather. Back in the valley, make room for table tennis, badminton or a quiet afternoon enjoying the covered hot tub.
Shuffleboard, darts and board games in the barn give you options whatever the weather. A shared evening meal can be the main occasion: divide the cooking jobs, dress the table and leave room for speeches, stories and plenty of laughter. Browse our valley experiences for more ideas.
Sunday: breakfast and an easy departure
Check-out is by 10am. Share the packing and clearing-up jobs, and keep breakfast simple. If you want to extend the day, plan a countryside stop after departure. Our Explore page and local guide can help you choose an outing around Rhayader and Mid Wales.

Check the beds, not just the headline capacity
For an adult hen or stag group, the cottage and pods provide 13 main-bed places, with space for up to 16 adults when each of the three small double futons is used by one adult. Some main beds are doubles or a king-size, so agree who is comfortable sharing before you book.
The cottage has two double bedrooms, one twin bedroom and two indoor bathrooms. Larch has twin beds; Rowan has a double bed and a single bed in a separate room; Oak has a king-size bed. Each pod has a small double futon and its own separate outdoor toilet and shower. The barn is communal space, with a toilet inside; nobody sleeps there.
Bedding is provided for the main beds. Bring bedding for any futons you use and bath towels for everyone. The pods are reached along a woodland path, so pack a torch and practical footwear. Check the full group-stay details, and contact us about specific access needs before booking.
Make organising the weekend easier
- Agree the budget: check the total accommodation price for your dates, then include groceries and any outings in the cost per person.
- Plan meals: organise dietary requirements and shopping in advance. Arrange takeaway collection if needed; delivery is unlikely to reach the secluded valley.
- Share transport: parking is available for up to eight cars. Plan who will drive if you head out for the day.
- Leave breathing space: one shared activity and a special meal can be enough. The setting gives you plenty to enjoy without filling every hour.
