Planning a Group Weekend Near Rhayader & the Elan Valley

A good weekend with friends or family needs a little structure and plenty of room to change your mind. Around Rhayader and the Elan Valley, you can combine a day exploring reservoirs and countryside with shared meals, games and a quiet evening back at your accommodation. Here is a suggested two-night plan, with practical details to help the organiser keep everyone happy.

Wales in the Woods is in Abbeycwmhir, Powys. It is a separate countryside base for visiting Rhayader and the Elan Valley, rather than accommodation inside the Elan Valley itself. Plan to drive for these outings and check your route before setting off.

Choose a base that works for the whole group

Before comparing places, agree who is coming and how they want to sleep. A family reunion with children has different needs from a weekend of adult friends. Look at actual beds, bathrooms, communal space and the total price for your dates.

Our Whole Valley group stay includes the three-bedroom cottage, all three meadow pods and your private communal barn. The barn has kitchen, dining, lounge and games space; nobody sleeps in it. Group stays accommodate 13–16 guests depending on the mix of adults and children and use of the small double futons, with a maximum of 16.

The cottage has two indoor bathrooms. Each pod has its own separate outdoor toilet and shower. The covered hot tub, grounds and communal spaces are exclusively for your booking, with no other guest groups sharing them. Read the group-stay details before deciding whether the layout suits everyone.

Friday: arrive, settle in and share supper

Keep the first evening simple. Check-in at Wales in the Woods is from 4pm, so allow time for the forest approach, unpacking and finding your sleeping spaces. Allocate beds before arrival rather than leaving the organiser to sort everything at the door.

Bring an easy first-night meal or arrange a takeaway collection on the journey. Deliveries are unlikely to reach our secluded valley. One person can organise groceries while another checks dietary needs and who is bringing what. Start the weekend with supper in the barn and a game of shuffleboard, darts or board games.

Saturday: a day around Rhayader and the Elan Valley

Morning: choose your walk together

After breakfast, make the Elan Valley Visitor Centre your starting point for local information. The official Explore Elan guide has walking, cycling and driving routes. Choose a route to suit the least confident walker, the weather and the time you have, rather than trying to cover everything.

A group does not have to do the same activity all day. Some can choose a longer walk while others explore by car and meet afterwards. Agree a meeting place and time before splitting up. The Visitor Centre also offers cycle hire; reserve ahead if several of you want bikes. Parking charges apply at the Visitor Centre.

Lunch: allow time for a proper break

Bring a picnic if conditions suit, or plan a stop in Rhayader. The town's food and drink directory lists pubs, cafés, restaurants and takeaways. Contact your chosen venue directly about space for your group, food service and dietary requirements. A table for a large party needs more planning than a coffee for two.

Afternoon: wildlife or a slower finish

For a different outing, consider red kite feeding at Gigrin Farm in Rhayader. It is a ticketed visit and advance booking is recommended. Check the current feeding schedule and opening days before fitting it around lunch; a wildlife visit is an alternative to a longer afternoon walk, rather than something to squeeze into an already full day.

Return to the valley with enough time to relax. Share cooking duties, enjoy the hot tub or settle in by the barn's wood burner. Leave a little unplanned time: catching up is often the main reason everyone came.

Sunday: breakfast together and an optional final stop

Check-out is by 10am. Keep breakfast straightforward, pack early and share the clearing-up jobs. If your group wants another outing, plan it after departure: a stop in Rhayader or another Elan Valley route can extend the weekend without rushing the morning.

What if it rains?

Build in an option that does not depend on a long walk. At Wales in the Woods, the communal barn gives your group room for shuffleboard, darts, board games, cooking and time around the table. A short outing and a leisurely lunch can be enough if conditions are poor. There is no need to commit the entire group to a wet day outdoors.
